The Zhang Pengchang team of the Spectral infrared Imaging Technology Laboratory of the Xi’an Institute of Optics and Mechanics recently participated in the investigation of the requirements before the excavation of the Sanxingdui site in Guanghan, Sichuan and the development of a special hyperspectral imaging scanning system for archaeology. The continuous spectrum data collection of cultural relics and fill layers in the excavation process, The unearthed cultural relics were collected for the first time in spectral imaging, and coordinated with the archaeological excavation, cultural relics protection and restoration departments to carry out research work under multiple application needs to help the Sanxingdui site to make new progress in archaeology.

Using the low-illuminance archaeological hyperspectral imaging scanning system and the truss infrared hyperspectral imaging scanning device developed by Zhang Pengchang's team, the in-situ hyperspectral imaging scanning of the cultural relics in the pit was realized. Up to now, the whole pit infrared hyperspectral data of No. 5 and No. 3 pits of the unearthed Golden Mask, the layered scanning hyperspectral data of No. 4 pits and the soil fault infrared hyperspectral imaging data of No. 8 pits have been obtained, and preliminary results have been obtained.

Data analysis results. The unique spectral imaging data obtained by the hyperspectral imaging technology of Xi’an Institute of Optics and Mechanics and related analysis results provide important data and technical support for archaeologists to study the formation process of the Sanxingdui sacrifice pit, the method of sacrifice, and the later restoration and protection of different cultural relics.

Zhang Pengchang’s team has carried out long-term research on archaeology and cultural relics protection, and has developed an archaeological hyperspectral imaging scanning system, a high-definition hyperspectral acquisition and analysis system for calligraphy and painting artworks, and a hyperspectral acquisition and analysis system for Tang tomb murals. It has established a pigment spectrum database for the Tang tomb murals and painting and calligraphy identification Atlas database and other data databases, and participated in the hyperspectral digitization research of Han Xiu’s tomb murals, and the identification and analysis of Chinese modern calligraphy and painting atlas.

It is understood that more than 500 important cultural relics such as golden mask fragments, bird-shaped gold ornaments, gold foil, giant bronze masks, and bronze sacred trees have been unearthed during the archaeological excavation at the Sanxingdui site.
